2017 Norfolk Summer Art Program

July 24-August 4, Monday-Friday, 10am-3pm

$175 per week or $40 per day

For ages 9-tween with exceptions made for artistically gifted children.

Join us this summer for art activities in Norfolk. Study with professional artists Karen Rossi and Skip Kamen, and explore the world of art! Discover famous artists, adventure in new mediums, learn drawing and painting techniques, and build sculptures. The program runs for two weeks with different projects each week.

Smiling Kids

Week 1: July 24

Landscape painting with acrylics on canvas. Learn to draw trees, blend acrylic paints and paint a background. Books of famous landscape painters will be on display. Journaling and scrapbooking. Intro to the Abundant Love Project (painting hearts on stones and leaving them in our weekly adventures for others to find)

Week 1: July 25

Building fairy houses with natural materials and placing them outside. An inspirational visit to the Artisan Guild with our sketch pads and a discussion with Vee Kausel about creating her wonderful fabrications, the various and vintage media she works with, and what it’s like to sell your work and make a living as an artist.

Week 1: July 26

Making SLIME (adding pom-poms, paint, sparkles and other fun materials). Building tiny furniture and creating a tiny room, and/or adding the furniture to our fairy houses. Looking at the artwork of Eric Carle and creating bug collages by painting on contact paper.

Week 1: July 27

Learning about the life and work of Louise Nevelson and creating a bas relief of recycled cardboard items (such as paper towels rolls and boxes). A visit to the offices of WIN. We will bring our sketchbooks to journal, and hide our stones along the way.

Week 1: July 28

Mosaic photo frames. Finishing any projects. Creating a tie-die t-shirt.

Painting

Week 2: July 31

Learning about the life and work of Louis Comfort Tiffany with a visit to the Chapel windows. Working with glass panes to create a glass window hanging. Building farm animals with air dry clay.

Week 2: August 1

Learning about the life and work of Georgia O’Keefe. Understanding a birds-eye view perspective and drawing large flowers with pastels using those inspirations. Dream catchers; writing down your hopes and dreams capturing them in a bottle and decorating that bottle with mixed media.

Week 2: August 2

Working with scratchboard. Visiting the library to see the latest art show, and meet with Miss Eileen to learn about her latest projects. Working with watercolors and learning about plein air painting.

Week 2: August 3

Creating a mobile. Taking a look at the life and work of Alexander Calder. Finishing any projects.

Week 2: August 4

Weekend in Norfolk begins, so we’ll be spending the day on the green! We will be enjoying face painting and the Abundant Love Project. Everyone will have their sketch pads and we will continue to draw, journal, printmake and enjoy stickers! We will also visit the show at the Art Barn, meet the artists and learn about their work and artistic process.
