Surtex
Show 2005 Off
to the Big City When we woke up bright and early on the morning
of May 14th, we knew that this was the day... the day that we'd show the stationery
world just what Karen Rossi Studios is really made of. After months of preparation,
we were finally ready to head off to New York City. With a van full of newly created
artwork, freshly printed panels for the booth, and presentation binders galore,
we were ready to take the city by storm. Grand
Unveiling During the two
weeks leading up the show, experimenting with new styles and mediums seemed to
become the theme of Rossi Studios. As ideas kept flowing into Karen's mind, we
found ourselves with more brainstorms than we even knew what to do with. Fortunately,
many of them took shape into some amazing new artwork. Feeling inspired by the
fresh, new concepts, we tried everything from collage to faux fresco to the more
graphic, Photoshop-based approach. Making
Connections Once at the show, we knew that meeting with existing
licenses and connecting with potential, new companies would be our biggest focus.
It always proves to be the most exciting part of the trade shows, as we discuss
new ideas, plan strategies, and explore which new connections would make the most
suitable partners. Many of the visitors who stopped by the booth were treated
to an unveiling of Karen's new fabric designs from Benartex. The fabrics, which
will be released in the fall, focus on one of Karen's most popular themes: bistro.
In this line, chefs fly across checkered panels, while vegetables and corks are
tossed in a whimsical, Rossi-esque style. It was inspiring to brainstorm and imagine
the wide range of coordinating products that could be created to match this top-notch
fabric. Zelda
Takes the Stage When working
the trade shows, it's impossible to predict what will happen next. The slow moments
will always linger from time to time, while the sudden rushes of people or the
unexpected excitement lays in wait just around the corner. Mid-Monday brought
a touch of surprise to the floor of the Surtex Show as an extravagant blonde sauntered
up to the Rossi booth, smile flashing and boa swaying behind her. Of course, we
knew she was on her way, and therefore, shouldn't have been so astonished by her
presence. But Rossi Studios' very own Caroline Bass surprised even us. With a
curly blonde wig disguising her straight, brown hair, and with contacts rather
than her usual glasses, Caroline was almost unrecognizable to us. She had successfully
transformed herself into Karen's most beloved character, Zelda the Jungle Shopper.
We weren't the only ones that were in awe of her rather extreme makeover. She
drew the attention of all, and just like Karen's whimsical artwork, her presence
brought smiles to faces of everyone who passed by. Over
in a Flash Before we knew it, the whirlwind of three solid trade
show days was behind us. We had reconnected with old friends, enjoyed the artwork
of fellow colleagues, and reveled in the excitement of New York City. Still, it
was home that seemed to be calling out to us. We dismantled the booth in record
time and soon found ourselves back on the road once again. This time, however,
Connecticut was our destination. It was there that homes, pets, and families were
awaiting us, making it a very welcome sight indeed.

Karen's Surtex booth.
 Ghouls
Rules This image shows the second rule in a series
called "Ghouls Rules." We've been experimenting with several Halloween
concepts, with this one serving as an example of a Photoshop illustration.
 Fabulous
Fabric Visitors to Karen's booth loved getting a sneak
peek of her Benartex fabric, which will be releasing in the fall.
 Flower
Fairy Karen
enjoyed experimenting with watercolors as she created some fun, new Flower Fairy
artwork.
