THE FAX MACHINE

Early in my career, there were many days spent creating at my parent’s specialty welding business. There was a big bell to signal me and 25 others to start promptly at 8 am. It rang again around 9:15 to herald the beginning and end a 15 minute coffee break, and again for the afternoon break, and finally at the end of the day. My favorite ring was high noon. I would walk to my dad’s office to find him finishing up a phone call or working on a quote.

Lunchtime was a mini excursion of Alva Rossi business and life “jewels of wisdom”, and a sandwich. One such springtime day had him grumbling as we headed out the door- rare for my father. “You used to be able to say that the quote was in the mail, it would give you an overnight to mull, and refine now everyone wants everything instantly. NOW, NOW, Now!!! The fax machine has destroyed our way of life”.

I remember shaking my head when he said it, thinking him out of touch. And I remember the day he proclaimed, “Someday you will be paying for water!" And I can’t forget his favorite, “buy gold”. I was in disbelief, a doubter, but, Oh Dad- how right you were. Oh Dad, you really wouldn’t like email.

FACEBOOK

After my big Facebook indulgence last month, the glow wore thin. Facebook is one more thing to check in a very busy May filled with show opportunities. My comrade and famous artist friend Paul Brent called out for all of his artsy friends to friend me. I was overwhelmed with requests and now regularly receive invites to all the best openings and happening events on the gulf coast. But I live in Ct. CT artists- we need to get with it!

RECIPES FOR LIFE- Last summer one of my interns scanned in all of my grandmothers recipes. Gems cut from 1950’s cereal boxes, or handwritten from sisters and neighbors. Some were passed down through generations and straight from the old country, others explore the new country through the adventures of cooking with Jello, cream cheese, canned soup and jellies.  I would like to illustrate this one of these days, as it reveals the immigrant experience through the heart of the kitchen in true Northern Italian style. For now, I will share them with you on Facebook.

ETSY

We haven't had any sales yet, but we have enjoyed being featured in several treasuries. There is a solid plan in place for continued and frequent postings which may help increase sales. I'm working with a summer intern to create personalized wedding pieces.Check out Karen's Etsy here.
