Taco The Wonder Dog

Often the giants among us come in very small packages. Such was the case with Taco the wonder dog. Many of you know him, he was included in my artwork and writings  since adopting him from the Humane Society in Newington, CT. At the time I  found him, I had been searching for a lab to fill the shoes of another incredible spirit named Shep.  None of the lab mixtures were compatible with Brindle, our pit bull/ boxer sweetie and I was getting depressed. To lift the moment, my husband proclaimed, “we have a small house, we need a small dog!” .That is when the handlers thought to fetch Taco as a possible suitable match. I was unbelieving that I could relate to a Chihuahua as a dog.  I imagined a high strung, menacing jumping bean of a yapper. Seconds later, the gorgeous creature that bounded around the corner was anything but. He was filled with peace and joy and gratitude. It was love at first sight.

Taco and I had a special bond. I boasted shamelessly that I would marry him if it was legal. He had been left in the midsummer heat on the steps of the humane society in a cage with his sibling. They were weak and without hair or food or water. The staff at the Humane society took great care and nursed them back to health. I often told the story as he held his head high.  And that is as much of the miraculous taco story as I can tell you at the moment, lest I start to tear.

There's Never A Good Time To Say Goodbye

Loosing him came in the middle of our major trade show, in the middle of the snowstorms and in the middle of my husband’s recovery from Cancer surgery. It couldn’t have been more painful. Taco was one that made everything ok. He was the one that came to the hospital with me and made everyone smile. Every morning was a celebration of life with him. There were limitless kisses and an enthusiasm for breakfast like no other- he never forgot his starving days.

Welcome To The Family

I said I wouldn’t be quick to adopt another dog, but it was way too quiet around here. Pucci and Kitty weren’t sure what happened. I found myself searching the internet, visiting Newington, filling out applications for pets, etc. I learned some great information to share with all of you animal lovers. And NOW there is a new guy in town named Pirate, the one eyed Chihuahua.. He is about 4` lbs, loves to chew on my pens. He picks up socks and shoes and puts them in new and mysterious places. He barked for the first time about two days ago. I guess he is starting to feel at home.

Read about some of the things I learned going through this process...
