Artsday

An Artistic Wonderland
For children who are artistically inclined or enjoy the challenge of creating new craft projects, the recent ArtsDay at Cheshire Academy (in conjunction with the Cheshire Performing and Fine Arts Committee) was a dream come true. Free hands-on art workshops were offered by professional artists on Sunday, March 16 from 1:00-4:00 PM. This was the 20th year ArtsDay was presented by the C.P.F.A. committee, whose home is Artsplace, a freestanding, town-owned art school. The event, which has become very famous over the years, was created to "take the mystery" out of the artistic process. ArtsDay is always held during the same hours on a Sunday (either the 2nd or 3rd weekend in March). So, be sure to mark your calendar for next year!

Kid Friendly
Karen was honored to take part in the event for the first time. She took her passion for mosaics and created a kid-friendly, paper version that was doable in a shorter length of time than traditional, tile mosaics. Using small squares of various papers, the kids were able to make masterpieces that looked very similar to actual mosaics. Karen was busy the entire day and surrounded by happy children of all ages. In describing the event, Karen said, "I was amazed by the endless enthusiasm of the kids to join in the creative experience with fresh, young, open minds at booth after booth. The energy in the room was astounding."

An Amazing Artsplace
This summer Karen will continue her connection with Artsplace as she teaches mosaics to teens and adults on Thursdays - July 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st. Students will learn grouting techniques and create a beautiful 12" X 12" mosaic of colored glass and tile, that may be inset into a table or chair or hung on its own. The class will meet from 1:00-4:00 PM and the cost is $100 for Cheshire residents and $110 for non-residents. A small registration fee also applies. All supplies are included. To register, call Artsplace at 203-272-ARTS/2787. You can also request a brochure about some of the other 50+ classes for ages kindergarten through adult. Artsplace is located at1220 Waterbury Road in Cheshire, CT.
