Michaud: Amazing
Artist & Paper Quilting Queen Up
for the Task Behind every great business there are lots of people
who help to make things run smoothly. Here at Rossi Studios, we've been privileged
to have many talented artists walk through our doors. One of our most recent employees
is Nancy Michaud, a "Jill of all trades" who is always willing to lend
a hand with any job. From helping with studio moves to clearing the land in Norfolk
for Karen's sculpture garden to assisting with the creation of new artwork, Nancy
has been there for any and every task. Art
is Life Nancy Michaud, a recent UConn graduate, has graced Rossi
Studios with her talent, enthusiasm, and cheerfulness for over a year. It wasn't
long after she started her initial internship here that it became very clear to
us that Nancy thrives on creating. She experiments with tons of different artistic
techniques and spends much of her free time painting, drawing, and gardening.
We all fell in love with her glazing style, a technique of layering paints over
textured surfaces to create incredible paintings and illustrations. She even used
this style to give a Nancy-esque twist to one of Karen's flying characters. Paper
Capers One of Nancy's most recent discoveries, paper quilts, sprung
from a need to organize the many drawings and paintings she had accumulated over
the course of 4 years in art school. She was lacking to space to save them all,
but struggled with the thought of throwing them away. On her blog,
she describes the situation, "Out of a whole semester of paintings, I really
only painted two or three that I wanted to keep. Rather than throw them away,
or let them collect dust for the rest of my life, I gave them new life, by cutting
them up and sewing them into quilts. Once sewn together, I painted over them with
oils. The translucent quality of the oils allowed the figures to peek through
and the layering of colors brings another aspect of texture to the paintings,"
The resulting pieces are both brilliant examples of creative recycling and absolutely
stunning artistic masterpieces. See
