Painting
for Charity
For
much of Karen's fine arts career, she has worked on a larger scale, creating everything
from large commissioned metal sculptures and installations to wall-size murals.
Furniture, including folding screens, mirrors, chairs, and tables, has also been
a focus of her artwork. So, when Jim Brunelle of the Farmington Valley Arts Center
approached her about painting a headboard for their upcoming SweetheART Auction,
she was unable to resist. Painting for a good cause, as well as utilizing the
"canvas" of a headboard, were exciting propositions.
Step
by Step
Karen had always
wanted to create an Adam and Eve headboard, and this project was the perfect opportunity
to do just that. She was able to play with a nature-based theme to bring a bit
of the outdoors inside. The headboard was initially painted with an antiqued effect,
onto which Karen then stenciled leaves and vines. The next step involved adding
grasses, and creating a lush, green "Garden of Eden" background. Finally
Adam and Eve and a host of animals (including Karen's very own Taco and Pucci)
were added to inhabit the painted garden. A variety of mediums including acrylic
paint, watercolor pencils, and spray paint were all used to achieve the final,
unique painted effect.
On
Display
Karen's headboard was on display at Scandia Down in West
Hartford Center, where it was adorned with high-quality linens. The Farmington
Valley Arts Center's Second Annual SweetheART Auction will be held on Friday,
February 9 from 6:30 - 10 PM at Avon Old Farms Inn. For more information and ticket
